Badugi is a game that is thought to have originated in Korea, but has now made the jump across the ocean to the United States where it has become an instant cult classic over the years in many of the card rooms in the country. The good news about learning how to play Badugi is that it is quite easy to learn how the game mechanics actually work as they are similar to 2-7 triple draw. The bad news however is that there is a completely new way to evaluate a hand in Badugi and that can be somewhat confusing for a person that is new to the game.
In terms of actual game play, the only real difference between triple draw and Badugi is that each player is dealt four cards instead of five. After the cards have been dealt however, there is a pre-draw betting round followed by the first draw. After that, there is a second betting round followed by a second draw which is then followed by a third betting round and a third draw. After the third draw has been completed there is a final round of betting at which point any players that are still remaining must go to the showdown after the bets have been called.
In terms of the actual hand rankings however, Badugi is a game that has complicated hand rankings. For starters, aces are always low and then in addition to that any cards that duplicate either a rank or a suit in your hand are disqualified from the proceedings. This means that the best hand in the game is A-2-3-4 where all four suits are present in amounts of one card each. Furthermore, a four card Badugi hand will always beat a three card hand which means that if the A-2-3-4 hand has two cards of the same suit, it will lose to any hand with unique suits and ranks because one of the cards will be disqualified and it will turn out to be a three card hand instead of a four card hand.
These hand rankings may seem complex, but once you have had a chance to sit down and play the game they will probably seem a little easier to grasp to you. The first thing you should learn is how to evaluate your hand. First, check and see how many cards you have in your hand that can be used to make a Badugi and (i.e. unique ranks and suits) and then see how many low cards you have. Starting from there, you can then formulate a Badugi strategy in the same way that you would formulate any lowball strategy.
